Humla Culture Trek – 14 days

Experience the Himalayas as they were when trekking was first pioneered 40 years ago in the least developed part of Nepal. The Humla region offers a combination of unspoiled trekking possibilities and traditional local community life, where life unfolds in the same way it has done for centuries. The highlights of this short trek are the high Himalayas surrounding you, the deep valleys cut out by the Humla Karnali river and its tributaries, along with the unique Tibetan villages, their monasteries and the local culture of handicrafts and farming. The Humla region is as remote as it gets in Nepal, and we guarantee pristine beauty, a peaceful atmosphere with complete absence of motorized sound pollution, phone signal or online connections, combined with first-class trekking staff, food and equipment.

This itinerary is combined with optional tours in Kathmandu and stay at Tiger Tops Karnali lodge in the Bardia National Park. The itinerary for the trek is flexible and can be tailored according to our guests’ wishes and capabilities.

Boudhanath, possibly the world’s largest Buddhist stupa and a site of great veneration for Buddhists, around the stupa have sprung up number of monasteries of the different sects of Tibetan Buddhism including one (on the west side of the stupa) that houses an enormous seated statue of Maitreya Buddha splendidly adorned. Bhaktapur, home of medieval art and architecture, also known as the ‘City of Devotees’. Tread the 17th century along cobbled pavements and marvel at the ancient architectures. Day 3: Fly Kathmandu - Nepalgunj

If the weather allows, we arrange a direct transfer in Nepalgunj to Simikot. Otherwise, transfer to hotel in Nepalgunj or to Tiger Tops Karnali lodge.

Day 4: Nepalgunj - Simikot (3000 m) – Dharapori (2684 m), 6 hours

We arrive in Simikot by flight from Nepalgunj in the morning. The trek starts immediately from the airport where we walk up through the town to reach the path above Simikot leading out northwest of the town. Ascend to a small settlement called Gwalekhor, which is located on a high point from where we will have a magnificent view over Simikot and the mountain range on the other side of the valley. Stop here for lunch break to load up on energy for the 3-4 hour afternoon descent. The total descent of the day is about 500 meters. We camp close to the village Dharapori.

Day 5: Dharapori – Lek Dinga (3613 m), 7 hours

The second day of the trek is the longest and most strenuous day, but also the most scenically rewarding. First, we ascend to the village Dhinga 400 altitude meters above Dharapori. In the afternoon, we climb 800 altitude meters up to the ridge before the second camp. A small stupa is located on the ridge and marks the best viewpoint of the mountains. From here, we can see two settlements, one is at the opposite side of the valley at about the same altitude as the camp and the other one is below the camp. Today’s camp is only a short walk away once we have crossed the ridge.

Day 6: Lek Dinga–Yakba (2820 m), 3 hours

As the hike today is rather short and downhill, we have plenty of time to appreciate the beautiful nature and tranquil atmosphere. The first stop on the descent is the small settlement of Lek Hepka, inhabited by the local people in the summertime for letting their cattle graze. On the way down you will have several great viewpoints over Yakba valley. Yakba is a lively village with 600-700 inhabitants, all Tibetan Buddhists. You will find beautifully decorated houses build according to traditional Tibetan architecture, encircled by green fields of wheat and millet.

Day 7: Exploring Yakba village and valley (Optional)

The village: Experience the Tibetan culture and lifestyle, from early in the morning when the villagers start their small fires in the kitchen and set out from the village to graze the cattle, throughout the day with activities such as school, handicrafts, cooking and farming. The monastery: Visit the local Gompa, which is located above the village. This monastery is inhabitedby local Buddhist nuns and is nicely decorated. You may take part in the Puja. Day hike: If you feel like exploring the valley any further by pushing into it, you may go on an excursion for some hours to Tangin. It is a very peaceful, easy and rewarding walk back and forth. The village is the last before complete wilderness takes over.

Day 8: Yakba – Camp 5 (3049 m)

We start the trek back towards Simikot by descending to the river about an hour. We cross the river about 200 altitude meters below Yakba, and from here, we start the ascent towards Camp 5. The path that leads out of the valley is relatively steep, but as soon as you reach the ridge, it gets flatter, wider and easier to walk. As we walk high above the valley, we experience great views. We camp halfway between Yakba and Simikot. Optionally, this camp can be excluded and we trek all the way to Simikot.

Day 9: Camp 5 –Simikot (3000 m), 5 hours

The last day of the trek will take us back to the Gwalekhor viewpoint above Simikot and it will be a slow ascent for about 350 altitude meters. Great view of the opposite ridge all along the trek. This trek will take about 5 hrs including a lunch at the Gwalekhor viewpoint. It will take us up through pine forest and small quint villages. In the evening we stay at the Sun Valley resort and prepare for flying out the next day.

Day 10: Simikot - Nepalgunj - Bardia National Park
