Raling Monastery trek – 15 days

Experience the Himalayas as they were when trekking was first pioneered 40 years ago in the least developed part of Nepal. The Humla region offers a combination of beautiful mountains, unspoiled trekking possibilities and traditional local community life, where life unfolds in the same way it has done for centuries. This culturally and scenically gratifying tented trek takes you from Simikot, the district headquarter of the Humla region, to the remote Raling monastery, where you will experience the authentic practice of Tibetan Buddhism. The highlights of this short trek are the high Himalayas surrounding you, the deep valleys cut out by the HumlaKarnaliriver and its tributaries, along with the unique Tibetan villages, their monasteries and the local culture of handicrafts and farming. The Humla region is as remote as it gets in Nepal, and we guarantee pristine beauty, a peaceful atmosphere with complete absence of motorized sound pollution, phone signal or online connections, combined with first-class trekking staff, food and equipment.

This itinerary is combined with optional tours in Kathmandu and stay at Tiger Tops Karnali lodge in the Bardia National Park. The itinerary for the trek is flexible and can be tailored according to our guests’ wishes and capabilities.

Boudhanath, possibly the world’s largest Buddhist stupa and a site of great veneration for Buddhists, around the stupa have sprung up number of monasteries of the different sects of Tibetan Buddhism including one (on the west side of the stupa) that houses an enormous seated statue of Maitreya Buddha splendidly adorned. Bhaktapur, home of medieval art and architecture, also known as the ‘City of Devotees’. Tread the 17th century along cobbled pavements and marvel at the ancient architectures. Day 3: Fly Kathmandu - Nepalgunj

Transfer to hotel in Nepalgunj. Overnight at hotel on BB basis.

Day 4: Nepalgunj - Simikot (3000 m) – Barauntse (3150 m)

Transfer to Nepalgunj airport in the early morning. We arrive in Simikot in the morning or early afternoon. The trek starts immediately from the airport where we walk up through the town to reach the path above Simikot leading out north east of the town. During todays’ trek we get a beautiful view over Simikot and the surrounding mountains. After 2-3 hours trekking we reach the camp for the night, located close to the village Barauntse.

Day 5: Barauntse–Limatang (3313 m)

The second day of the trek is a longer (5-6 hours) but still quite easy hike. The path leads through several villages where we will encounter traditional Tibetan lifestyle. On the way, we will see local handicraft like weaving, wood work, farming and water mills where the locals mill their flour. In the evening, we may stroll through Limatang and explorer the viewpoints above the village.

Day 6: Limatang – Raling Monastery (4000 m)

We start the day early and pack our energy bars in an easily accessible pocket as we have a demanding day ahead. After approximately 3 hours steep trekking, we will reach the ridge before the Raling valley, which provides a perfect spot for a lunch break with a beautiful view of the mountains. From the ridge it is still a 450 altitude meters climb, which takes about 2-3 hours. The camp is located close to the monastery, so we will have the possibility to visit Raling during the evening.

Day 7: Exploration day (Optional)

We spend the day experiencing a puja with the monks in the monastery, lighting a butter lamp, and enjoying a cup of Tibetan salty butter tea. We enter the cave next to the monastery where it is believed that the famous 11th century Buddhist monk Milarepa resided for a period. We also explore the Raling valley surrounded by steep walls of up to 5050 meters mountains and its rich bird life.

Day 8: Raling Monastery – Campsite Talki (2900)

After a hearty breakfast, we start todays descend of about 1200 meters to the camp outside the village of Thehe. After a rather steep descend from Raling, the path flattens and we can really enjoy and appreciate the beauty of the valley as you walk through the paddies of farmland, which are spread out all the way from the bottom of the valley to the soft mountain ridge. Enjoy the afternoon in the camp relaxing or explore the small community of the nearby village Talki. If you wish to do a shorter trek, you may trek directly from Thehe back to Simikot in a single day, thus skipping Kharpunath and the Humla Karnali river.

Day 9: Campsite Talki – Kharpunath (2095 m)

We spend some time in the morning exploring the village Thehe, one of the main villages in the district. From Thehe we descend to Chuwa Khola. We then follow the river downstream to Kharpunath, a small village situated at the confluence with the Humla Karnali. Enjoy the afternoon in the camp, while chilling your feet in the clear cold water of the Humla Karnali river and explore the small Hindu temple and burial site in Kharpunath.

Day 10: Kharpunath – Simikot (3000 m)

On this last day of the trek, we follow the Humla Karnali upstream for about one hour before we start ascending towards Simikot. During the morning trek, if the weather is clear, we may see the mountain flights arriving and departing from Simikot. We make a steep climb from the bottom of the valley and enter Simikot from the southeast which is the older part of town, all Hindu. Continue through the main bazar all the way up to the northwestern corner where the lodge is located above the town. We spend the rest of the day relaxing or exploring Simikot.

Day 11: Simikot - Nepalgunj - Bardia National Park
