Day 3: Fly Kathmandu - Nepalgunj

If the weather allows, we arrange a direct transfer in Nepalgunj to Talcha. Otherwise, transfer to hotel in Nepalgunj or to Tiger Tops Karnali lodge.

Day 4: Talcha airport (2738 m) – Campsite near Jhyari village (2681 m)

From the airport in Talcha it is a soft descent for about 2-2½ hours to the campsite which is situated above the villages of Jhyari and Topla and behind the ridge of hills surrounding Rara lake. The route follows a newly established road for about 1½ hours but then leaves the road for a path leading down to the campsite. From the camp there is a beautiful view over the valley and the villages. It takes about half an hour to walk from the camp to the village of Jhyari(Altitude: 2656), which could be an afternoon walk with the opportunity to explore the small local community. Optionally, this camp can be excluded and we trek to Mili Grass Land on the first day either via Jhyari or via the direct path to Rara.

Day 5: Campsite near Jhyari village - Mili Grass Land (2970 m)

For this day’s trek there are two options. First option goes through Jhyari village, which counts about 130 houses andis surrounded by big pine trees. From Jhyari the path makes a rather steep ascent up towards Rara. The ascent is about 500 altitude meters to the ridge before moving down to Rara lake. On the top of the ridge, there is a field, which makes for a beautiful lunch spot. The trek from here down to Mili Grass Land is short and takes us through old pine forest. The second option for the day’s trek is to follow the newly established road above the villages. This will be an easier walk since it is not so steep and the road is quite wide. The road joins with the path about ½ hour walk before the ridge. The camp is located at the south-western side of the lake on a vast meadow with a beautiful view.

Day 6: Mili Grass Land – Campsite North (2970 m)

This is an easy day of flat walking for about 2-3 hours. After about an hour walk there is a small Hindu temple on the right side of the path, where we can get a great view of the lake from a watchtower. The camp is on the north side of the lake where there is an open piece of land with another watchtower.

Day 7: Campsite North – Murma Danda – Camp Lakeside NE (2990 m) (Optional)

We make an early start and bring packed lunch. It is a steep climb through the pine forest. Occasional openings in the vegetation provides good views of the lake and gradually we will see snowcapped peaks to the southeast and east in Dolpo. After about two and a half to three hours, we will reach the ridge where we will get a view to the north and northwest. The path continues upwards along the ridge to the west for the 3653 m peak of MurmaDanda, which will give a 360 degrees view of the Humla district to the west and the Mugu district to the east. Descend to Murma village and further down to the Nijar Khola and follow the path back to Rara lake, and the last campsite at the northeast side of the lakefront.

Day 8: Camp Lakeside NE – Talcha airport (2738 m)

It is about one hour walk to the southeast corner of the lake where the path breaks off towards Talcha and another 2 hours descent to Talcha through pine forest. Flights leave from Talcha during the morning until noon, so an early start is necessary.

Day 9: Talcha - Nepalgunj - Tiger Tops Karnali Lodge
